Getting through Giriyondo border from South Africa into the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Park

To get through the border one has to have a lot of patience...

To get to Giriyondo border post you first need to drive through the Kruger National Park.

The Kruger National Park is the size of a small country. Over one million visitors stay here annually at the different lodges and rest camps. Here you can see wildlife at its best and it is home to the big five. The Kruger National Park in South Africa is linked by the Giriyondo border post to the Limpopo National Park in Mozambique.

To get through the border at the South African side is very quick but one must have some patience getting through the border at the Mozambican side. People working at the border are generally friendly and they all speak English, on the South African side they also speak Afrikaans and on the Mozambican sie Portuguese. To go through the border it cost R10 per vehicle and R12 per person. Be prepared to pay a bit more to enter the Limpopo Park, R50 per person and R50 per vehicle.

To get through the border into Mozambique you need the following:

South African passport holders don't need a visa when traveling on holiday; other passport holders do need a visa and make sure you get it prior to your visit. The cost of the visa will depend on where you are applying. Prices range from about US$20-40 for a single entry visa and US$40-100 for a mulitple-entry visa. Visas take about a week to process and you must enter the country within a month (or two) of the date your visa is issued.

Third party insurance for your vehicle and a

Valid passport

When you plan to enter through Giriyondo border post, make sure you arrive before 15:00 - if you arrive after this, you will be turned away. Make sure you fill up with diesel/petrol at Letaba Camp in the Kruger Park; the first available Petrol Station is 208km away at Chokwe.

As much wildlife as you will see in Kruger Park so little you will see in the Limpopo Park. They did release some elephants into the park but it is a big park! Don't try and take on the roads in the Limpopo Park when it's raining, because you are going to come second. The roads are not tarred, gravel all the way... It is advised that you drive a 4x4 vehicle. Stick to the speed limit in the parks as there are people that enforce them and if caught you will be fined.
