Seaside Lodge

We arrived at the Seaside Lodge bed & breakfast quite late and the owners stayed up to welcome us. After we booked in, we we're led up a set of stairs to the top floor where our room was situated. Our unit had its own 20+ square metre balcony with picnic table.

The door opened on a spacious room with tasteful decor of yellows, whites and blues. The bathroom was dolled up with a deep metal Victorian style bath tub and everything else in wood.

The room contains a large double bed, mirror, couch, cupboard, TV with DSTV, stand with kettle and coffee. They also leave out chocolates for you to snack on.

Breakfast consisted of a either breakfast cereals or fresh fruit, followed by toast with egg and bacon. You could also have yogurt and juice or coffee.

The unit we stayed in had a view over Salt Rock and on the ocean.

Sea Cottages

On the second day in Salt Rock we booked into the Sea Cottages self catering accommodation. This accommodation establishment is located right on the beach with direct access to the beach via steps.

The cottage was really beautifully decorated with new furniture. The colour scheme of the cottage we stayed in was white and ‘n light creamy brown. The kitchen and bathroom finishes were of good quality and everything in this self catering unit was neat and clean.

The undercover patio has tables and chairs and deck chairs from which you are able to see the ocean. We spotted dolphins from here!

The closest swimming beach with life guards are about 700m from the cottages. You can reach the swimming beach by walking along the beach. There is also a tidal pool if you prefer the safety of it.

Salt Rock, the town

Salt Rock is a small town on the Kwazulu Natal north coast or Dolphin Coast. It is about 40 minutes' drive from Durban's International Airport. The town is right next to Ballito and Chaka's Rock.

What to do in Salt Rock:

  • fishing - there are also beautiful reefs offshore
  • main beach has lifeguards and is shark protected with shark nets
  • swim in the tidal pool next to the main beach

Temperatures on the coastal region of Natal:

  • KwaZulu-Natal is known to be a province that experiences an eternal summer. The province has a tropical climate and rainfall is generous during the summer months.
  • During the Christmas holiday season, it can get extremely hot and humid along the coastline - temperatures are milder as one moves inland.
  • Durban enjoys an average temperature of around 27 degrees Celsius (81 degrees F) during the month of January, and a daily maximum of roughly 22 degrees C during July.
