Shiluvari Lakeside Lodge
58Beautifully, centrally situated are the only words that I can think of to describe this lodge
It is situated on the banks of the Albasini Dam overlooking the Soutpansberg Mountains. This is a good base to start exploring the Venda country with all its myths and legends. The lodge is set in the middle of a rich heritage of Venda and Shangaan culture, and showcases the Open Africa Ribolla Arts Route of which the world renowned Venda "big five' artists can be found. For the more adventurous you can visit these artists on a self-drive basis or make use of one of the accredited guides from the Ribolla Tourism - The Ribolla Route is named after the uniquely shaped mountain in the Makhado District the Ribolla Route showcases the talents of its artistic inhabitants, dancers, storytellers, gardeners and singers.
The lodge was once the old farmhouse and it is beautifully changed into an intimate lounge and restaurant that overlooks the dam. In winter you can curl up in front of the fireplace.
All their rooms/chalets are decorated from local furniture and fittings and it never feels as if you are invading the other dweller space as the chalets are very secluded. If you really like something just ask the staff and they will assist you on where to buy one of your very own. Be warned that you won't be able to conduct your business from your chalets; it is only available from the main lodge (telephone, TV, e-mail, fax). This is a true country breakaway experience.
If you are still up to it take a stroll of the 60-hectare property of natural bush following the trails along the dam or into the bush. For the more energetic you can go cycling. If fauna and flora is your thing there is plenty to see of bird life, look out for duiker, bushbuck, waterbuck or kudu. Or you can just relax next to the pool admiring the stunning views over the dam.
Spoil yourself in the evening, sipping a sundowner drink while enjoying a sunset cruise on their motorised raft, while keeping and eye out for the Hippo and Crocodile on the side of the water.
The on-site restaurant is well known for its delicious afro-fusion cuisine. The simplistic approach is evident in utilization of fresh, local ingredients, beautiful presentation and a fine balance of African flavour and European sophistication. Amongst the most popular dishes you will find Sweet potato and Avocado soup, Seared beef fillet crusted with African spices and butternut chips, mango ice-cream and chocolate and chilli sauce.
