Manners in Southern African Countries
68When visiting a foreign country one is not always sure of what is socially acceptable and what not. In most of the southern African countries it is good manners to ask the locals before photographing them and always receive a gift with both hands. Well here are a few more tips for a few African Countries.
Angola
Tipping: Tip 10%.
Don't photograph public places, buildings or events.
Homosexuality is illegal.
Botswana
Men should always be greeted first with the main greeting being Dumela.
DRC
When going to the DRC and you drive yourself you should clear the road when motorcades pass. To photograph these motorcades is also illegal as is photographing of state buildings.
At 06h00 and 18h00 daily the national flag is raised and lowered then traffic and pedestrians are required by law to stop for the ceremony.
Kenya
The social customs vary according to the race, tribe and religion of the people in the area.
Western social behavior is accepted and people are easy to approach.
Kenyans expect and value punctuality unlike in some of the other African countries.
Lesotho
The Basotho people take offence if they are not greeted or if people do not respond to their greeting. Locals appreciate visitors who make an effort to learn a few Sotho words. In the Basotho culture people never show that they are frustrated towards one another. So always remain calm.
To show your gratitude and respect when giving or receiving anything you use both of your hands.
Madagascar
The locals are very hospitable and welcoming but their relaxed attitude may be frustrating.
Don't wear military style clothing.
When you are invited to stay in a village you should always give a gift to your host and not money.
Don't photograph military or police establishments.
Mauritius
Respect the traditions and customs because they are highly valued.
It is appropriate to give a gift as a token of your appreciation.
Swaziland
Traditional custom are still widely used.
You need permission to take photographs and it is unlawful to photograph police, the Royal Family, military personnel or vehicles.
Tanzania
Don't photograph military servants or institutions.
It is also not allowed to smoke in the public, if you see an ashtray it is a good indication that smoking is allowed there.
The locals appreciate being greeted in their own language, you should say Jambo.
Zambia
Homosexuality is illegal.
When visiting you will often receive gifts, these should never be declined and you should accept them with both hands.
