61Sipping cocktails and shaking it with the Johannesburg party crowd
Don't expect the 20 - 35 year old crowd anywhere near a club before 9pm on a weekend as the clubs only really start filling up around 10pm and later!
The nightlife in Johannesburg offers something for every taste in music, crowd and dance style. You merely have to ask a local for directions to the best clubs close to your accommodation.
Sandton is the place to be if you are looking to hang out with the big spending crowd. Clubbing in Sandton offers stylishly decorated clubs with tall cocktails and pretty people. The downside of clubs in these areas are the price tags on entry and refreshments - but hopefully the ambience will make up for it. The music usually is chilled house to encourage patrons to laze back with a drink and network.
If you really want to party the night away, you do it with the young and upcoming crowd. Clubs frequented are all over the northern suburbs of Johannesburg. Entry fees vary from free to R70 and cocktails are never more than R30. This crowd is more likely to party with you and show you around.
You go to inner city clubs if you are looking to experience the cultural diversity of Johannesburg. These clubs are frequented by mixed crowds of artists, musicians and professionals. Live DJs and bands perform every weekend. Parties go on till the early morning hours.
PS. Not every night is clubbing night. Most clubs are open Wednesday to Saturday only.
If you aren't the clubbing type but looking for something a little more in the line of local music, Tanz Café (Bryanston), Blues Room (Sandton) and Tempos (Randburg) offers new and established solo artists and bands almost every night of the week. Entry fees range from R40 - R100 depending on which artists are performing. You can have good food while listening to good music.
